A hull identification Number is a twelve character number found on the transom of boats. it looks like this
ABC12345A808
ABC is the code issued by the US Coast Guard (or in Canada the Canadian Coast Guard) that identifies who made the boat
12345 can be any combination of numbers or letters except I, O, Q, and is assigned by the manufacturer.
A8 is what the US Coast Guard calls the date of certification, meaning, the date the manufacturer certifies that the boat meets whatever Federal Safety Standards it must meet. However, most people think of this as the date the boat was built
A = January
B = february
C = March
D = April
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = August
I = September
J = October
K = November
L = December
8 is the year of manufacturer = 2008
08 The last two digits is the model year. The model years run from September 1 to August 31 of the next year. Example, 2008 model years starts in September 2007 and runs to August 31 2008.
The number can also have a code that shows what country it is from. This is in front of the HIN as in
US ABC12345A808 or if made in Canada
CA XWY 12345A808. There are country codes for all nations.
For homemade boats or boats that were made before November 1972, a state can issue a Hull ID number to that boat. Each state has a manufacturers ID code from the USCG. The number would begin with the state code, such as WNZ for Washington, or CAZ for California.

Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) or the boat registration numbers on the hull? The HIN is placed on the boat during manufacture. It is similar to a VIN number on a vehicle. The boat registration number on smaller boats is a state registered number similar to your vehicles licence plate. Where as on larger vessels the hull numbers are federal issued numbers.
HIN in this case refers to a Hull Identification Number. That is: a number which identifies said boat/vessel, also known as a "hull number". Exactly how those are given depends on your use case and country, e.g. in the military, lower HIN generally means that the vessel is older.
The HIN is the Hull Identification Number assigned to the boat. Each HIN is unique to that boat, and is the same as the VIN on a motor vehicle. All boats manufactured after 1972 have a HIN consisting of 12 characters as required by the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1972.

This format of Hull Identification Number was used from November 1972 to August 1984. It shows the Manufacturer Identification Number, the Hull Serial Number and the model year code. CLY: Caillou Boats, 4 Edgewater Place, Winchester, Mass 27206: Hull Serial Number M79D: November, 1979 -279: Suffix relevant only to this manufacturer and not part of the formal HIN.
On the hull
Usually on the transom - it might be a thin plate covered by layers of paint. To be more precise, after October, 1972 vessels built in the United States were required to place 12 digit hull identification numbers (sometimes referred to as HIN) on the vessel's hull. The HIN is typically sighted on the starboard side transom of these vessels. These numbers are typically imprinted or engraved into the hull. Foriegn made vessels will typically have a hull manufactuerer number somewhere on the back quarters of the exterior hull or inside the hull. These foriegn vessels are not HIN numbers like you see in the United States but more hull numbers based on how many were produced of that model (such as "hull number 512").
There's no VIN, but there's a HIN (hull identification number) which serves the same purpose. It should be on a black plate that is either on the top of the jet ski at the very back or on the starboard side at the very back. The HIN will be inscribed on this black plate.
They were made for Travis Boating center by several different manufacturers. Kenner, Polar and Dynasty. Look at the HIN (hull identification number) the first part of it will tell you who manufactured it. For Example: My HIN starts with MJI, this tells me that it was Manufactured by Dynastay, Inc.
