Singing is a learned skill not inherited or environmental. Many trained European or American singers can't duplicate ululation ( a long, wavering, high-pitched vocal sound resembling a howl with a trilling quality heard in Arabian cultures), khoomee/sygyt (Tuvan overtone singing which allows the singer to sing two or three notes at once) or Inuit throat singing where notes are produced on both the inhalation and exhalation. Yet anyone brought up in these cultures could learn these skills. The level of skill in any singing style is partly a result of the construction of the vocal system (genetic) but mainly the result of practice.
