Male members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are usually ordained as Deacons when they are 12 years old, or at the time of their conversion if they convert later in life. Deacon is the first and lowest office of the priesthood. Deacons have the authority to pass the Sacrament (Communion or Lord's Supper) to the congregation, teach, fellowship, and assist the Bishop with temporal matters (such as collecting offerings, caring for needy members, and maintaining the church building)
