a balanced equation is when all matter is accounted for on both sides. This is important because matter cannot be created or destroyed. For example, the creation of glucose through photosynthesis looks like this:

CO2 + H2O = C6H12O6 + O2 + H2O

This is an unbalanced equation because there is not enough oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon on the left side to create the right side. The balanced equation would be:

6 CO2 + 12 H2O = C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O

The number of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon atoms on each side, when subtracted, create 0 which means all matter is accounted for and therefore the equation is balanced
