No; however that is not to say that small groups or individuals did not participate in buffalo hunts - but as a tribe they did not hunt buffalo. The Cherokee were woodlands people, and when they moved to Oklahoma they stayed in the same basic environment (hilly woodlands areas); buffalo lived and traveled through the plains (large open grasslands).
They survived by all the buffalo mostly because they used the buffalo for a lot of things and they also survived by the food they gathered and clothes.
They relied on the buffalo, and the annual buffalo hunt became a major source of food. They were skinned and used for pemican which was traded at trading posts near the Red River.
use buffalo skin for a blanket and make tippi :D
Until the Dakota Sioux were put on reservations they were able to use their environment to its fullest extent. They were hunters and gathers. Often they moved theircamp to follow the herds of Buffalo . They used every part of the Buffalo they killed and would not kill more than they needed. The cultural beliefs concerning the care of the earth and the how they were connected to it and the environment was very important. We could take some lessons from them on how to care for our environment. They understood that the environment was a part of them and kept them alive.
