It is a kind of deadbolt for an entry door in a house or commercial site. The concept is, with a standard deadbolt, you have an outside part that takes a key to unlock, and an inside part that you turn a small lever to lock (single cylinder). If you have glass near the lock, a burglar can break the glass and turn the lever and gain access. Unfortunately - if you have a key cylinder on both sides of the door (dual cylinder) you could potentially lock yourself in the house when you need to leave in an emergency (like a fire). The solution is a lock that is convertble from single cylinder to dual cylinder. A key is held "captive" in the lock until a second key releases it when you leave. This is a captive key system
