Creme brulee - creme means "custard" and brulee translates as "burnt". It has a brittle caramel disk on top, which must be broken through to reach the custard.

However, you may also be referring to the "creme caramel", which is a custard with added gelatine (so that it has a jelly-like texture), topped with a runny caramel sauce.
