Was Mitochodrial DNA used to trace modern humans back to an ancestral eve in Africa?
Yes. Mitochodrial DNA is only passed from mother to daughter and can thus be used to trace the female line back for hundreds of thousands of years to a common female ancestor of all modern humans. This common female ancestor is rather picturesquely called 'Eve'. It should be pointed out that other women lived on earth at the same time as 'Eve', including her own mother, the mother of her husband and probably her sisters. However, in each other family tree, the female line eventually stops and the ancestral DNA is only passed on via a male descendant (who may in turn have female descendants). Every time a woman only has sons, her mitochodrial DNA stops with her, even though she may have granddaughters carrying another grandmother's mitochodrial DNA . Another, more recent study has traced the Y chronosome part of our DNA back to a common male ancestor of all modern humans, because the Y chronosome can only be passed from father to son. This common male ancestor is in like fashion picturesquely called 'Adam', and once again, there were other men alive at the time, including his father, the father of his wife and probably his brothers. There is no suggestion that this ancestral 'Adam' lived anywhere near the time of the ancestral 'Eve'.
