The U.S. Coast Guard is a multi-mission branch of the military that engages in maritime search and rescue, law enforcement, drug interdiction, alien migrant interdiction, port, waterway and coastal security, homeland security and national defense. They operate under the Department of Homeland Security, but can and have been transferred into the Department of the Navy in times of war. The Coast Guard operates small boats from shore stations as small as 25 feet up to ice breaking and high endurance cutters of 420 feet in length.

To be the guardians of the sea. To perform law enforcement ie drug interdiction, migrant interdiction, fisheries. Perform rescues at sea whether by boat, ship, or helo. To perseve life and property at sea. To enforce polution laws. To conduct boardings of vessels at sea for safety and law violations. To ensure Aids to Navigations (Bouys) are in proper location and operating so vessels can travel safely. To operate Loran stations to help vessels know their location. To help defent the country against foes domestic and abroad. For some the purpose of the Coast Guard is to further their education or learn a new trade. It's all subjective and how you look at things.
