The early communications between computers began with computers communicating with computers over phone lines. When the internet began, phone lines provided the only way individuals with computers could use the internet. Today few people still use phone lines because a twisted pair of wires can not support the extremely high speed needed to transfer the data contained in a picture.
The internet is not supplied by a set of main computers. The internet itself is the connection between millions of WANs around the globe.
