Some refer to it as the Concierge's bible, others suggest it's the Concierge's little black book. Whatever it's called, it contains the who's who, the where's where, and the what's what of some of the most influential individuals in the city. This doesn't mean the mayor's number (although some do), what it refers to is the movers and shakers who you contact when you need something now, without argument, and without hassle.

Les Clef d'Or, the world's oldest association of Concierge's have on their global list approximately five thousand members. These are the crème de la crème of the discreet, the magicians, and the people to know.

A truly professional and renown Concierge may face a typical day consisting of:

Requests for the best seats at a West End or Broadway play that has been sold out for a year in advance.

Dinner reservations at the restaurant that has a waiting list of six months.

An impromptu request by a doting husband to have the bathtub of their suite filled with fifty bottles of Pernod-Ricard Perrier-Jouët champagne, whilst he and his husband are at theatre. Adding to the challenge of finding these £50,000. per bottle delights, it's 8pm and most fine wine purveyors are already closed.

A request by a sheik to have a live lamb delivered to their suite for inspection before being prepared for a late night dinner.

A decision by two guests, who decided flying is just too boring now that Concorde is gone, to sail home on The Queen that afternoon, but the ship is just pulling back from her berth in New York Harbour. (The concierge without being ruffled at all, did three things: he instructed his staff to bring around the limousine to take the passengers down to the harbour heliport, he phoned his 'in man' at Cunard to advise them the passengers would be boarding within the next 30 minutes, despite the fact the Queen was already turning in the harbour, preparing to move down the Hudson towards the Verrazano Bridge, and into the Atlantic. And he phoned his 'in-man' to start up the blades on the helicopter to take his guests to the helipad on the bow of the great liner.

Once all this was complete and guests enroute to their vessel, the concierge made one last important call - to his friend, the senior purser aboard the Queen, to arrange his guests table preferences, and of course, to arrange for a fresh bouquet of roses to be placed in their stateroom, along with a bottle of, what else, Perrier-Jouët!

None of the above is an exaggeration. These are real scenarios that range from the everyday mundane, at least to the Concierge, to those challenges every professional concierge loves to receive.

There are several concierges who have such fame they are known to receive Gold Rolex Watches as gratuities, along with copious quantities of cash. Some receive cars. Others have had month-long holidays for the concierge and his family aboard private yachts in the Mediterranean.

A true Concierge, in a hotel of luxury, grace, and style, will tell you that their abilities to serve their guests is only limited by the bounds of their imagination.

And the first place to begin, when it comes to providing such service, is with the priceless book whispered to have many different titles, of which 'The Concierge Book' is one.
