What is piston rod?

The piston rod is more usually called the con rod or connecting rod. It is connected at the top end to the piston with what is called a wrist pin. (The wrist pin is a cylinder of steel that slides through the side of the piston and through the top hole in the connecting rod.) At the bottom end the connecting rod mates up to the crankshaft. There is what is called a rod cap that goes on the bottom of the connecting rod to hold that rod onto the journal of the crankshaft. The connecting rod's purpose is to transfer downward and upward thrust between the piston and crank. The combustion of fuel drives the piston down to the crankshaft were it is converted to rotary force which drives your wheels. The wrist pin, is called a piston pin or gudgeon pin in the UK. The hole in the con-rod is commonly called the small or little end, and the other end where the cap holds it to the crankshaft is the big end.

Will connecting rod caps on a 350 Chevy fit in either direction?

NO! They have to be installed a certain way. If you have it on wrong it will actually be quite obvious. Keep in mind the bearing notch has to prevent the bearing from spinning in the same direction as the body of the connecting rod does. Install the cap so the bearing notch faces the same direction of rotation as the rod body does. The sides of the connecting rod are thrust surfaces as well. Install the cap backwards, and they most likely won't match up either.

What is difference between piston rod and connecting rod?

A connecting rod connects the piston to the crankshaft - A piston rod (also called a wristpin)connects the piston to the connecting rod.

What is a rod bearing?

Rod bearing (short for connecting rod bearing) Is the bearing where the connecting rod is attached to the rotating crankshaft.

What is a rod journal?

Connecting rod journals are the part of the crankshaft where the connecting rods attach to. There is one rod journal for each piston/connecting rod in the engine. These journals have a machined surface so the connecting rod bearings can move smoothly as the crankshaft rotates.

How do replace connecting rod bearings?

1. Clean the bearing surface of connecting rod and connecting rod cap. 2. Clean upper connecting rod bearing and lubricate the bearing face with clean engine oil. 3. Clean lower connecting rod bearing and lubricate the bearing face with clean engine oil. NOTE: Align the tabs on the connecting rod bearingswith the tab grooves in the connecting rod. 4. Install upper connecting rod bearing in connecting rod. 5. Pull the connecting rod into position against thecrankshaft. The connecting rod may need to be rotated in order to prevent contact with the piston cooling jet. 6. Install lower connecting rod bearing in connecting rod cap. 7. Install bearing cap in position on connecting rod. Ensure that the identification numbers are stamped on the same side. 8. If you have Type A connecting rods, install two bolts and two nuts. If you have Type B connecting rods, install two bolts. The torque is very important. It's probably 40 ft pounds plus 1/4 turn.9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for the remaining connecting rod bearings.
