It's a saw with a thin, flexible blade mounted in a frame. It's used to cut curves. It is a hand saw for fine intricate cuts in wood, such as fretwork and moldings for coping cuts.

Coping saws are small hand held saws so have little power behind them (compared to electric saws such as band saws or scroll saws etc. ) so serious injury is less likely to occur. The main advantage is with the thin blade which enables you to vut intricate curves, giving you more freedom with shapes.

Because it can cut curves.

The curves resemble the cope of a vaulted roof, taking its name from the Latin word for a cape or robe - cappa.
