All Religious should have contemplation as the core of their spiritual life. However, technically speaking, an apostolic religious is one who is not cloistered* and who has an additional ministry among the people of God. A contemplative is usually a cloistered religious whose way of life allows more time for meditation and contemplation, and whose day, (in the Catholic Church) is woven around the "Hours", which are prayers said together at certain times throughout the day..

*A cloistered religious lives in a monastery and usually remains there. Visitors are strictly regulated. The Catholic Church has rules and regulations regarding cloister.

This is, at least, how I understand the terms.

What is the difference between apostolic orders and contemplative orders?

The difference between contemplative and apostolic orders is in the work that they do. Contemplative orders have prayer as their main work. They will have other duties to maintain the monastery and support themselves, but they're primary work is prayer. Usually, but not always, these orders are enclosed, meaning they do not leave the monastery grounds unnecessarily. Apostolic orders have some type of work outside of their convent or monastery. Often the community will have a specific mission in which their sisters work, such as hospitals, schools, parish ministry, etc. However, some orders allow sisters to work in whatever ministry the sister feels called to, in consultation with the leadership. So, to sum up, Contemplatives view prayer as their primary work, while Apostolics view their ministry as their primary work.
