A camcorder is a video camera that has a built in recorder to capture and store video information. Almost all domestic video cameras have a recording facility built in so they are all camcorders.

A digital camcorder is one that stores data in a digital format. This includes DV tape systems, Hi-8 tape, HDV and all solid state recorders using SD cards or similar storage. Commercial models include Digibeta among others.

Older, non digital camcorders include VHS and Betamax camcorders with U-matic and Betacam being two of the professional camcorders. All of these use analog recording techniques.
