President Kennedy set up a naval blockade to turn back Soviet ships that were carrying missiles to Cuba. The US promised not to invade Cuba and to remove nuclear missiles from Turkey and Europe in exchange for the dismantling of missile bases in Cuba. The Cuban missile crisis came to and end because Kennedy and Khrushchev made an agreement. In the agreement it stated that if Kennedy were to remove its naval blockade around Cuba and if it removes its missile bases in Turkey, Khrushchev would remove his missile bases from Cuba.
The Platt Amendment codified relations between the United States and Cuba after the Spanish-American War.
