The River Thames flows through the capital and is very important. The River Severn is the longest. There are others that have ports etc that have been very important in the past and songs have been written about them such as the River Mersey in Liverpool. Chester which was occupied by the Romans and had a fort there, is on the River Dee. The Roman fort of Ribchester is on the River Ribble. There is also the Avon, Stour, Tyne, Tees, Trent, Ouse, the Humber, the Wyre (Fleetwood) and the Lune (Lancaster). There are others too.

The Severn Bore, the second biggest in the world, is a tidal wall of water that flows upstream some 25 miles inland. Often surfed, the bore can raise the depth of the river by some 50 feet.
