Fish generally appear larger underwater due to the refraction of light. When light passes from air into water, it bends, making objects appear closer and larger than they actually are. Everything is always relative to the size of the fish. If you have a small, inbred fish of less than 2 or 3 inches, its gravid spot will be no larger than 1/4 of an inch just prior to releasing the fry. If the fish is larger than that, its 'spot' will be proportionately larger.
