A water moccasin, which is the only poisonous semi-aquatic North American snake, gives birth to between 1 and 15 live baby moccasins, which are lighter in color than their mother. They are more similar in color to a copperhead than the adult moccasin.

No, it is a myth that baby snakes can't control their venom. All reptiles are born from day 1 with instincts. But usually, the adult is more dangerous than the baby because the adult has a larger venom gland & can inject more venom.

How do snakes move on land and in water?

I am a snake keeper and avid student of all things reptile. There is no known species of snake that can not swim. Many land snakes spend a lot of time in the water including the larger heavier varieties such as the Anaconda, Burmese and Reticulated Pythons, etc. Snakes are, by design, well suited to swimming. They are buoyant and move swiftly in the water using the same muscles they use to move across dry land. Even snakes that are originally from the desert areas take right to water. I know because I have a Desert Phase California King Snake that loves taking baths in deep tubs. Snakes are amazing creatures that are worth getting to know.

Do copperhead snakes live in Ohio?

Ohio has only three species of venomous snakes, two of which have rattles at the end of the tail (Eastern Massauga (pictured right) & Timber Rattlesnake). The third species is the Northern copperhead. Although many believe the water moccasin occurs in Ohio, it actually ranges no farther north than the Dismal Swamp in southeastern Virginia in the eastern portion of its range, and extreme southern Indiana and Illinois, in the western part of its range. Water moccasins are not native to Ohio.

Are there venomous snakes in Wisconsin?

There are six different poisonous snakes in South Carolina.1. Copperhead2. Pigmy Rattle Snake3. Timber Rattle Snake (aka Canebrake Rattle Snake)4. Water Moccasin (aka Cotton Mouth)5. Coral Snake6. Eastern Diamondback Rattle SnakeThe Copperhead is the most common poisonous snake in SC, and the Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snake is the most deadly. The Water Moccassin, as it's name implies, lives mainly in or nearby water. The Coral Snake is the only representative in SC of a group of snakes called the Elapids. This group contains some of the worlds deadliest snakes including vipers, mambas, and many Australian snakes like the Taipan or the Tiger Snake. The Pigmy Rattle snake is by far the smallest of all the poisonous snakes in SC, it seldom reaches over a foot in length. Timber (or Canebrake) Rattle Snakes are fairly normal and are probably can be said to be the "average" rattlesnake.
