One way that food and economy are related is when their are food shortages. If food is in demand, the prices go up. This leaves citizens less money for other things. This can cause other types of businesses to suffer.

A food economy is all of the components of the food 'chain' that grows, produces, processes, distributes, prepares, and disposes of food.

A local food economy strives to create this inside the confines of the city limits - serving those living inside that particular city.
