Why is Vietnam important to American history?
The U.S. participated in the Vietnam War. We were allies with the South Vietnamese. Vietnam won their independece from France and then they split into North and South. We helped and aided the South Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. If the young are finally given the correct history on the Vietnam War (I'd rather place my bet on a Vietnam War Vet speaking to the kids than any books could tell) then that's magic, because the U.S. government not only lost that war, but they under-estimated their enemy. For the first time in American History many American citizens were torn over this war and didn't give the Vietnam Vets who made it home the honor they deserved. The U.S. Government gave little aid to the Vets and many of them had psychological problems (trauma) and also drug addiction. The U.S. government tried to hide the embarrassment of this war and took it out on the very men who served their country. If anything should be learned about this war all countries shouldn't be quite so hasty to go into war before learning more and getting to know their real enemy. War simply makes money! Some wars have to be fought, but the Vietnam War was a mistake and isn't that a lovely label to put on the Vietnam Vets. Returning Vietnam veterans suffered from many mental disorders as a result of their combat experiences. Prior to the Vietnam war, terms like combat fatigue and shell shock were used to describe these symptoms of trauma. However, by the early 1970's the psychiatric community became more aware that these veterans were displaying clusters of symptoms that were latter define as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM). These symptoms included a heightened startled response (like hearing a car backfire and responding like it's gunfire), intrusive thoughts, images and memories of the trauma, and nightmares, among others. Socially, the Vietnam veteran might have felt rejected by those opposed to the war, felt out of place and alienated in civilian society, could not adjust to the demands of daily life, and frequently fell into drug or alcohol abuse or dependency. They have frequently struggle with what is described as survivor's guilt. The Vietnam veteran with PTSD has presented major challenges to their loved ones, their communities, and the country even to this day. It has challenged the health system in place and designed to serve them, the Veteran's Administration health care system. The difficulties in treating and re-integrating the Vietnam vet with mental disorders has taught the society about the nature of psychological and emotional trauma for all of us and this has prompted the search for better prevention and treatment of these lifelong and sometimes intractable conditions.
