A fuel pump pigtail would be the electrical connector and the last few inches of the wire harness before it is plugged into the fuel pump. It connects the vehicles wire harness to the fuel pump. The fuel pump pigtail is known to melt down from heat because of high resistance due to dirty/loose wire connections.

Does the pigtail have to replace the when the fuel pump is replaced on a 1996 Tahoe?

Most fuel pump manufacturers will supply a new pigtail with a new fuel pump. This is because the pigtails have been prone to failure in the past. If you are supplied with a pigtail it would not be a bad idea to replace it. It does not usually NEED replaced though. When replacing the pigtail be sure to solder your wires carefully, and use heat shrink tubing(not electrical tape). Do not use crimp on "butt" connectors unless you want to drop your fuel tank every couple years to replace them.

How many grounds does 1997 Chevy Tahoe fuel pump have?

We had continued problems with our fuel pump on our 97 tahoe. Finally a mechanic told us that the wiring had been recalled and it required purchasing a pigtail from the dealer. We bought/installed the new pigtail and haven't had a problem since (a couple of years now)

On these vehicles, the wire harness to the fuel pump/ sending unit goes bad. Replace with a new updated pigtail wiring harness. The fuel tank must be removed from the vehicle to accomplish this.

Do the fuel pump wires come with the fuel pump?

No, when you purchase a fuel pump you get only the fuel pump. The wiring that connects to the fuel pump is located on the vehicle and should not be removed when you remove the old pump.
