First, although some Reform groups call their synagogues Temples, there really is only one Temple in Jerusalem. A Gabbai is the person who helps run a synagogue and ensures that all needs are met, that services run on time, and some even help maintain Jewish cemeteries.

Not all synagogues have a Gabbai in the sense described above. In some, the Gabbai is the person who calls people up to the Torah during services and follows the reading to make sure no mistakes are made.
