Although many younger children think the giraffe habitat is the zoo, in truth this animal lives naturally in Savanna in large herds. However, the giraffe is native to Africa, specifically in the southern most part of the Sahara. Even so, some parts of East Africa now protect his magnificent animal. Unfortunately, humans are by far the worst predator. Therefore, unless more protected areas are provided, the number of declining animals will continue.

The type of giraffe habitat needed for this animal to survive and thrive in is a dry, open woodland. Other natural giraffe habitats are savannas. When in the place where this animal does best, small thorny trees known as acacia are in abundance. Actually, this tree is the favorite meal of the giraffe and while to people it appears to offer no nutritional value, it is a staple of the diet.

Because of the way in which the giraffe is built with the long, extended neck, the only way to drink is by spreading the front legs and putting life at risk for predator attack. For this reason, giraffes cannot eat low vegetation foods, which is why regions with tall trees would not make a good home for this beautiful animal. Instead, the giraffe needs the tall trees, stretching the neck to great heights.

In the giraffe habitat area of sub-Saharan Africa, this animal is found in various regions that go from the southern part of Mali to Kenya, as well as the northern region of South Africa. Within the areas where the giraffe lives, it is common to find herds hanging around waterholes and rivers during the day. However, when rainfall comes, this animal will move to deciduous woodlands that are open. At night, the giraffe is most active when temperatures are cool. An interesting fact that most people do not realize is that this animal only requires two hours a night.

Having the opportunity to see a giraffe in a controlled environment such as a zoo is exciting and educational but if people can at some time in life book a trip to natural giraffe habitats, there is no comparison to the experience. With this, people would be able to see giraffes in their environment, watching them eat the leaves from tall trees, bend to sip water, play, care for the young, an in rare occasions, see a giraffe fight. While on a trip such as this, getting the chance to see predators of the giraffe is another possibility, opening the eyes to a completely different world.
