A Go cart, or KART as they are now known,is a small racing vehicle to be used only on a race track. They started off in about the late 1950's as a simple frame with a seat for one person and small engines from lawnmowers and chainsaws. The early ones were very cheap and simple, often even with no brake. It was a cheap way to go racing !
By the mid 60's, when I got into it, they were quite a lot more complicated, my first Kart had a British Villiers 197 cc engine and a 4 speed transmission and disc brakes. It would easily do 60 mph on our local track. -We once took it to a lonely wide, straight road and paced it with my dad's car - it got to about 85 mph before it started vibrating badly.
Karting today has become very sophisticated and big business. Many now famous racing car drivers had their start in very fast complex Karts. Now there are many rules and regulations governing them and many specialised components. A competitive kart today can cost as much as $10,000 and will have an engine that can rev up to over 12,000 rpm and needs a re-build after each day of competition !
Many areas in Canada and US now have recreational Kart tracks, where karts can be rented 10 minutes at a time. These karts are built very sturdily and heavy, generally with large lawnmower engines and can do about 30-40 mph. I regularly take my 13 year old grandson to one and he loves it - an excellent way to learn to drive !
