It depends on what promise you are connecting to it. Promises like "I promise I'll stay with you forever" - basically all "forever" promises - are things to be very cautious with at your age. You're at the beginning of a time where you'll both change very much and there's no telling what is going to become of your relationship during that time. A ring in general is no problem, but you shouldn't attach too much to it.
