What is a good attention getter for a love essay?

Do you mean an attention-getter right at the start of your essay? It would depend on the style of writing you intend to use.

For example, you might begin, 'I first noticed him because he was purple. I hated him because he was purple.' and you could go on to write that it was in art class and the teacher was assigning color themes: he got purple and you were furious because you'd already worked out a marvellous idea for a purple theme. But it made you notice him...

Don't, I hasten to say, use my exact words; as your teacher would say, needs work! But you get the general idea. Figure out where in the essay your attention-getter will be and think up something out of sync with what a reader or teacher expects, but not so far out of sync that it begins to run away with the essay. An attention-getter is a split-second thing and once it has you hooked you get into, or back into, the smoother flow of events.

There are many other ways to use attention-getters, of course. Think of the way writers have grabbed your own attention, or the way you've been attracted to a particular thing - a sight or sound, maybe - by something quite unrelated to the big picture.

For example, you might be looking at a row of shrubs in a park when suddenly a huge grasshopper leaps out of one and disappears out of sight back underneath it. Now your attention is firmly on that particular shrub you notice it's just coming into bud, and there are a couple of flowers opening that show the whole thing will soon be a blaze of scarlet. This leads you to check out the surrounding shrubs, and you see that some will be covered in golden flowers and some in pale cream; a hedge which looked like an unbroken line of identical green leafy bushes until the grasshopper grabbed your attention is transformed into present promise of future beauty...

I apologize if you are scared of large leaping bugs and would actually run very fast in the opposite direction instead of sticking around to check out budding beauty. Change the grasshopper to a little fluffy kitten if you like, sleeping under the bush.

We can talk of a 'romantic novel/poem/song', or a 'love letter' or a narrative/descriptive/argumentative essay'.

Or do you mean an essay on "Why I love my city/school/family"? Then you could start with a quotation about the beauty/importance of what you're writing about.
