Hi, I'm 32 and my 12 year old daughter is quite experienced, like yourself, and was needing to go onto a horse that was a few hands taller. I bought her a horse that I felt comfortable with, an Apaloosa. Most appies are bomb proof and always reliable. it's not really what breed of horse you get, but what the horses experience level and exposure are like. Have they done pony club? Normally the older the horse is the more it has done, but it's not always the case. You dont want to be buying an old, old horse but definatly around 6-10 is a good age range. Have they ever been shown? I've been riding horses since I was 5 and loved every bit of it. You just need to look around and you will know when the right horse comes along.

It would depend on the level of horsemanship of the child. Has the child ever ridden before, has the child been raised with horses, does he/she know how to handle and act around horses? All these factors and more have to be considered when purchasing a horse for a child. As a rule though, you would definitely want a middle aged to older horse that has "been there and done that". You would want a seasoned mare or gelding, and definitely not a stud horse. Make sure that you see the horse ridden, see how the child interacts with the horse and how the horse reacts to the child before buying. Also, getting the opinion of a good, experienced horse person would also be extremely helpful.

A good horse is a horse over the age of 7. Any younger, it will be too inexperienced. Since horses live, on average, to be about 25-30, a good aged horse that has already been well-trained would be about 12 years and older. 7 is a good age, but if your looking for a horse for a very young person, an older and more experienced horse is better. Be sure to be POSITIVE that the horse knows the ropes- not to spook at cars, sprays, hoof trimmings, etc. Also remember to check for any lameness.
A good, quiet breed of horse would be a Halfinger, but they are mighty big and may be too big for a 10 year old. Also, there is a Miniature horse. There are two types- A and B. A is smaller by about 2-4 hh, and type B has longer legs. They are obedient and calm and lovable. Although you have to be careful- if you feed them too much, they get too wide for the saddle and rider.

DO NOT PICK A SHETLAND. They are pretty mean at the best of times, and very stubborn. They may be cute, but they are very hard to handle.

Another good horse is the New Forest horse. They are calm and friendly, but they may be very hard to find. They originated in the New Forest in Hampshire in Southern England. They may be a little large at an average of 13-14 hh, they are very nice horses.
You can also look at the Pony of America (POA) and the Australian pony. They are much smaller breed, and may be your ideal pony a 10 year old.

there is no right or wrong choice of horse for a 13 year old but it all depends on the ability of the child, and the temperament of the horse, when i was 13 i had a 15.1hh piebald cob but i was a very nervy rider when i was 13 so have a look round, try some horses out and you will know when the right one come up.

P.S. i would recommend you ride it in the ring, over jumps and out hacking just to be on the safe side (that's if the child can do this)

hope this helps

it really depends on her experience. i got my first pony when i was 11, i had a section a. if she is tall for her age then maybe a cob of some sort and if she is heavy weight cobs are also good weight carriers and are very well behaved. try to avoid the flighty kind e.g arabians, thoroughbreds ect. get a stocky built one, they save alot of money as well as they have strong feet and don't need re-shoeing all the time like some breeds. overall i think a cob is proberbly the best. just look for an alrounder good websites are - horsemart, newrider and horsequest... hope this helps. good look :)

It really depends on what kind of ability your daughter is at, and what disciplines you would be doing. For example, if it were English riding you were doing, you would want a calm and experienced horse. They could be between 9hh and 12hh, so that your child had some control over it. You wouldn't really want to put your kid on a 17hh racehorse would you! The pony should be of suitable age, so not a frisky youngster, but a pony who has seen everything to see, and is comfortable with young children.

If it were western riding you were doing, you would probably want a quarter horse or pony that is calm and responsive, but still fun to ride.

Also, you must be keeping the pony in a knowledgeable home, or at a livery yard with instructors and assistants at hand if you should so need it. Perhaps start you child off with a few lessons both on the horse, and on ground, and same goes with the parents. If you know what to do, everything will turn out just fine!

Good luck!

Is A 3 year old horse Good For A 10 year Old Girl?

It depends... On the girl's riding level Disposition of the horse Is the horse trained? If the Girl's a beginner and the horse is calm and trained then that would be good but if the horse is untrained i would not recommend it. If the Girl is a fairly advanced rider I would say the horse would be fine for her. Just remember the horse is young and probably spooky will be a brat sometimes. So keep your patience and hang on tight.
