This depends on the horse as an individual. For a kids horse, you want an older (10+), calm, well trained horse in good health and with plenty of experience in what discipline the child is interested in. Breed and color should not matter

Of course it depends on the age, size and riding level of the child but here is the rule of thumb:No really young horses. A green horse/green rider combo is bad news. I like a horse 10 and over for a child under 7 years. The best breeds are Quarter Horse or QH cross, Paint of Paint cross, Welsh or Welsh cross. (this will depend on the individual horse) Contrarary to popular belief, ponies don't always make the best kid's mount. Right size, wrong temperment. Ponies can be difficult.
