Since I go often to visit Italy I had the opportunity to stay in at least a dozen of hotels in Venice, also of different categories, and I can say that this has given me the best value for money. It is also charming, little and romantic. The only flaw is that the hotel entrance is in a "calle" (Venetian street) a bit dark and hidden

By the port, I assume you mean where the airport and cruise docks are located? It's about a 20-30 minute water taxi ride into the mainland of Venice, which is where the Principe Hotel is. You can pay double the price for an express water taxi, but they are only about 5 to 10 minutes quicker than the normal taxis. Not worth it, in my opinion.
That depends on what you're looking for. Hotels will be more expensive, but offer better service, amenities and accommodations, but hostels will be cheaper.
