Snake Pit (written by a woman) is a historical example of a novel about life in a Mental Hospital and it is not played for Laughs, more like Tragic Farm, not FUNNY FARM stuff. It was the first modern novel set in a mental institution, and for its time was a popular work, later made into a movie. sadly the author, who may have been channeled into writing the book for (therapy) or Rehab- relapsed and went back into the Snake Pit. Laurel Hill- the (Funny House) for Hudson County way back when was nicknamed both Bleak Rock (from the Prison quarry site) and Snake Hill! That"s where the Nuts were! One of the indadvertenly funnier episodes in Superman comics dealth with Lex Luthor"s escape from (Bleak Rock) via a homemade radio set-after having made contact with a U.F.O. that landed int he yard, naturally the authorities did not beolive the police and guard reports- a UFO landing in the yard of a mental hospital-Funny Farm.

A good related text for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" could be "Girl, Interrupted" by Susanna Kaysen. Both explore mental health institutions and the impact of societal expectations on individuals' mental well-being.
