The attack upon Fort Sumter played directly into President Lincoln's plans for keeping the Union intact. This was due to the fact that many people in the North saw no reason to engage in a conflict that could cost too many American lives.

Lincoln did not want to create a huge causality list & believed any conflict with the South would be a short one. What the attack on Fort Sumter did was to convince Northerners that military action against the South was now required as the South had proven to everyone that they with force of arms attack all Federal posts located in the South.

The fact that Lincoln only called for a small number of volunteers to serve only 3 months was an indication that Lincoln believed any conflict would be short.
