For the man that keeps deleting my answer.. this guy is wondering whats a good household substitute he can use.. HOUSEHOLD.. Rubbing Alcohol works nicely.. cool blue flame too. : You can use any fuel based liquid as long as the flash point is lower than the Naptha liquid used in Zippo and Ronson lighter fluids. : Using higher flash point fuel is dangerous because the metal chimney (one with holes) gets hot, and the heat disipates into the fuel chamber agitating the evaporation of the volatile liquid. : However, lower flash point fuels can and will create sooth and deposits in the Zippo system, which means higher costs on wick replacements, chimney cleaning, dirty flints, using more flint strikes, etc, as it was never designed to use these other types of fuels. : In the end, it would cost more to maintain the lighter in top condition. : In case of emergencies, such as camping and military use, Kerosene would be the next best. Never use jet fuel such as Jet K, because they contain additives for jet turbines that would produce toxic fumes on a Zippo.

Using anything but a naptha lighter fluid will void the warranty..and they are warrantied for life. It's not worth it. There are several naptha lighter fluids out there, so hunt around. Official Zippo fluid is available online at the Zippo site.

Use a naphtha based lighter fluid like Rhonson or Zippo brand lighter fluid or any other commercially available naphtha fluid. You can buy 100% naphtha at a lot of hardware and home improvement stores and it will work fine in your lighter

To the original answerer, you didn't read the question.

Here is my fuel list, with each sucession being worse for your lighter, and the last two will gunk it up and smoke like a pig.

1. Ronsonol

2. Coleman fuel ( supa cheap )

3. Kerosene

4. Axe

5. Gasoline (completely dangerous, risk of losing limbs)

I had to get a new wick also and all the gas stations near my house didnt have any sooooo i made my own.

1st get cotton ball and try to unroll it (you wont use the the whole thing u can make like three with 1 cotton ball)

2nd u only use like a little less than half so rip off less then half of it.

3rd twist it to make it thinner

4th wrap a wire around it.

probaly you could use gas but use extreme caution as gas is much more viotaile. but really your better off spending a few extra dollars and buying real lighter fluid if its for a lighter

You could put meths in it though its probably safer to stick with lighter fuel. There are other liquis that would work such as pure alcohol, which would give an invisible flame.Acetone too.

My wick just died and not a chance to get a few locally, so I used a smoking pipe cleaner. So far, it's working nicely

Can you take lighter fluid from one lighter and put it in a zippo?

im not sure if you mean taking the fluid from a regular lighter and putting that into a zippo or just simply zippo to zippo but I'll answer both. I wouldn't recomend putting normal butane lighter fluid into a zippo because it runs out really fast and makes the flame far too big to be practical. if you want to change fuel from one zippo to another simply remove the insert, peel back the first felt layer, take out the cotton from inside and putting that cotton into the other zippo. hope that helped :)

Can lighter fluid be replaced with gasoline?

If you run out, a variety of liquid fuels can be used as a stopgap, Ronsonol will work but as it is a lot more volatile than the naphtha-based Zippo fuel, it will evaporate quickly while the lighter is in your pocket, and let you down. Nothing is as good as the real thing, believe me.

Why won't a new Zippo lighter work?

It needs a flint and lighter fluid. Zippo does not ship with either item, they must be purchased separately. Check at the tobbacco counter for these items. The flint is a small cylindrical style object which rests under the wheel, this can be put in by pulling the silver part of the zippo out of the case it comes in, unscrewing the golden screw, dropping the flint into the hole and then putting the screw back in. It is a good idea not to tighten the screw all the way, so that it can be unscrewed by hand if the zippo ever gets jammed. To refule the lighter, first of all you need some fluid! Then lift the arm which sits on the opposite side of the lighter to the wheel, into a vertical position. Then you take the inside part of the lighter out again, and then turn it upside down so that you can see the foam. If you are using lighter fluid with a squeezy nozle, you can poke the end of the can into the hole, and squeeze in short bursts of around one second, with two second gaps. If you are not using a squeezy can with a pointed nozle, you need to pinch the foam, and lift it up towards the golden screw head, then pour the fluid in slowly until you see it rise up above the foam. In both cases of refulling, you need to stop as soon as you see the utmost layer of foam become damp or wet, overfilling will cause leaks or for fluid to drip out the wick if you hold it upside down. Doing this means you risk setting the excess fluid on fire and badly hurting yourself if there is any on the case of the lighter or your hands. Zippo strongly recommend that you wash your hands thoroughly, and wipe your zippo before you ignite the lighter.
