Check out some Bass-DVDs, they are a good help.
Generally it depends on the genre of music and how proficient you want to be. If you want to be as good as Mark king (Level 42) the bass player all professional bass players would want to be, you've got some serious practice ahead.
practice, practice and practice.
Practice, practice, practice!
Practice, practice, practice!
There are many good, light bass guitars. Some good brands include Rees Guitars Lightweight F-Light Bass Guitar and the Yamaha RBX4 A2 Super-Light Electric Bass Guitar.
I would recommend a fender jazz bass what a great bass it is
You'll be able to get a sound out of it for practice, but the tone probably won't be very good. The size of the speaker cone required to produce the bass (12") means it won't really be responsive enough to deal with the higher note on the guitar successfully.I don't THINK it'll damage guitar or amp. It shouldn't damage your bass amp, but if you use a bass with a guitar amp it will pretty much destroy the amp.
if you are abeginner and have a budget, a good bass guitar is the epiphone thunder bird which can go for around 300 dollars. if you are an intermediate to advanced, a good bass would be a fender jazz bass or precision bass which have a price range of 500 to 2500 dollars. Preference my favorite bass guitar tough is the Rickenbacker 4003 fireglo which go for about 2500-3000 dollars maybe more
To start off, whichever is more fun for you. If its not fun, you wont practice, if you dont practice you wont get anywhere. I tried guitar at first and quit shortly after, too much memorization & odd hand contortions involved in those chords. Years later i picked up bass guitar & have had no desire to play six string again. Its also important to consider what your goals are. If you wish to play in a band, it will be much easier to get a gig as a bass player than as a guitar player... Guitar players are a dime a dozen, but a good bassist is hard to come by. However, if you want to be in the spotlight, guitar is the way to go. Sad but true, its the way of the world. The bass player is always the red-headed stepchild of the group. Stamina and endurance are important attributes of a bass player. While the guitarist may throw in a solo here & there, or strum a few rhythm chords, the bass player and drummer have to keep the song moving, and so they seldom get a break. Memory, dexterity and speed are the important attributes of a guitarist. The guitar is responsible for the most memorable hooks in many songs, and can easily make or break a band. Guitar is a very versatile instrument, which is both a good thing and a bad thing, on the good side it give you a lot of creative leeway, on the bad side, it significantly increases the level of crap youll need to learn to be a successful guitarist.
