If you are starting out with your first flock, a dual purpose bird is best. This type of chicken will lay eggs and provide meat for your family after a couple of good productive laying seasons. The breeds that I will list for you meet this criteria several ways.

They mature early, are productive egg layers and when fed a good nutritious diet will provide excellent quality meat about two years later when eggs slow.
