Methane, which comes from the stomachs of cattle and sheep, from thawing tundra, from food rotting in landfill and from drilling for oil and mining, is a greenhouse gas that is much more dangerous than carbon dioxide.

A:The most prevalent and common greenhouse gas is water vapor, which accounts for up to 75% of all greenhouse warming. Methane accounts for well under 1% of the overall effect.

A greenhouse gas must have three atoms or more so they can capture the earth's heat and stop it leaving the atmosphere. Gases with three or more atoms will vibrate, become excited, and warm when struck by the long-wave infra-red radiation coming up from the surface of the earth. So gases like oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H), for example are not greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4) are greenhouse gas.

Non-greenhouse gases are all gases except the greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are those that can absorb and emit infrared radiation.

The most abundant greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are:

  • Water vapor (H2O)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Methane (CH4)
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O)
  • Ozone (O3)
  • CFCs
