They are what connects the transmission to the front wheels. There is one per side.

They have a Constant Velocity (or CV) joint on each end to allow the suspension to move up and down with bumps and to allow the wheels to turn when you turn the steering wheel.

Signs the CV joints are going bad are a clicking or clunking noise when the car is moving and a clunk on accelration. The joints are and integral part of the half shaft and so it would need ot be replaced as a unit.
