The retina is the highly vascular layer of the eye that contains rods and cones. Rods and cones are photoreceptor cells that are responsible for detecting light and color, and they play a crucial role in vision. This isn't easy to answer because 'middle layer' is hard to pin point. From the outside front to the back, this is the order, Conjunctiva, cornea, aqueous humor, pupil (with the iris at both sides), lens, vitreous humor, retina, and then the optic nerve. The uvea is the middle vascular layer of the eye. It contains the iris, ciliary body and chorid.
