"Where are the British soldiers what swore to take our home and country from us? Their blood has been shed and fills the footprints left by them on our shores erasing the presence they once had here. There is no place to hide, no refuge for them anywhere. They will loose the battle they began." Expanding on this a bit: the words "hireling" refers to Americans recruited by the British to fight on their side, and "slave" to actual slaves who went over to the British on promises of freedom. Many of them deserted their masters to spy, scout and fight against them. After the war, the British refused to repatriate the slaves, resettling them in Bermuda or other islands under their control. Francis Scott Key was a slaveholder, and as a US District Attorney vigorously prosecuted abolitionists.
