In the US, they are still referred to as hurricanes, although here in Florida we just call them storms since we get them so often :)
Quick Note: There actually is a difference between a hurricane and a typhoon: A hurricane starts east of the International Date Line while a typhoon starts west. Just thought I'd mention it ^_^
