Kommandant is Germany for commandant. The word is used for the officer in command of a prisoner of war camp, an internment camp or a concentration camp. The German version is often used for local colour. (Note that on many websites the word commander has crept in).
Commander's office
Kommandant of Auschwitz.
he was the kommandant of the Plaszow-Krakau concentration camp.
It was horrible beacause they were separated from there family's. They had to listen to the nazis or else they could end up died. most of them died beacause of the condintions they were living in.
The phrase was taken from Dachau, where it was on the gates. The first kommandant of Auschwitz had served in Dachau previously and thought that it was an appropriate motto.____The motto was used at all major Nazi concentration camps except Buchenwald. Before the Nazis came to power 'Arbeit macht frei' had been the slogan of the public works programme in the Weimar Republic but it is older than that, going back at least to the 1870s. Previously it had meant something like 'Work [employment] is the key to freedom [emancipation]' but obviously the SS used it as a sick joke.
There have been claims that human skin was used to make lampshades during the Holocaust, but these claims have been widely discredited. While the Nazis did engage in numerous horrific acts of violence and genocide, there is no concrete evidence to support the alleged production of lampshades made from human skin.

the Kommandant.
yes, but that was dependent on the individual kommandant. Rudolf Hoess (kommandant of Auschwitz) liked to use Jehovah's Witnesses as his slaves as he said that they worked harder (they were also fed better and treated better), he even let them cut his hair and shave him.
