Laminating is a way to protect and preserve documents and other materials. Travelers often laminate their business cards to use as luggage tags and laminate their Travel Insurance cards to carry in their wallets. Lamination can protect items from smudges and fingerprints, creases and wrinkles, spills and sun damage.

Laminating machines are available in a range of sizes from small household use to large industrial use. They also range in price from quite inexpensive to very costly. Laminating machines work by adhering a layer of permanent plastic film over items or documents.

Before using your laminator, you’ll need to put rolls of plastic film on it. All you have to do is put the rolls on the spindle pipes then thread the laminate through the roller bars with the dull side facing up. Use caution if changing the film while the rollers are hot.

Starting with the basics, let’s begin by plugging in the laminating machine and turning the device on, allowing it to warm up. Most machines have an indicator light telling you when the machine is ready to be used. If our lamination machine has speed settings, chose one and then place the item you want to laminate on the machine. You’ll want to set the speed faster for thinner items and slower for thicker items. In laminating, there are no do-overs, so you want to be sure that your item is appropriately placed on the machine before hitting the “run” button. When you’ve run your item through the machine, press the “stop” button. At the back of the machine, there should be a cutting mechanism where you can cut your item from the roll of plastic film.

There is another type of machine, called a pouch laminator, that works by placing the item to be laminated inside a laminate pouch and turning on the machine to heat up. With the pouch laminator, the pouch is fed into the machine and rollers pull the pouch through to heat the laminate and seal it.

Be sure to perform regular cleaning to your laminating machine to keep film from building up on the rollers. You can do this by cleaning the rollers with an abrasive pad and window cleaner. Before replacing the laminator film rolls, be sure to dry them with a soft microfiber cloth.

What is the best brand of laminater available?

If you are talking about a pouch laminator, I would highly recommend the PL12A pouch laminator from Banner American. I have used this laminator myself and it is durable and can laminate almost anything. It uses four rollers, which allows the laminator to evenly distribute the heat. It also has a separate switch for the motor and the heat, so you don't have to have the motor running while the laminator is warming up. http://www.abcoffice.com/pl12a.htm

Can you use sheet protectors in a laminator?

In a word, no. The sheets used for laminators are designed to soften and seal against themselves when rolling through a laminator and contained inside the protective sheet. The plastic used in a sheet protector is not designed for that and will become nothing more than a gooey mess that could muck up the laminator itself and would definitely foul the protective sheet, requiring it to be replaced and ruining whatever it is that you were trying to laminate. Get proper lamination material. You'll be glad you did.
