∙ 12y agoAir is normally an insulator-not a good conductor of electricity, in other words. It inhibits ionized particles from traveling. (An ion or an ionized particle is an atom that has lost or gained electrons and so has become electrically charged.) It takes a tremendous amount of electrical pressure (voltage) to overcome this resistance and turn air into a conductor of electricity.
