The mass number is the sum of the amounts of protons and neutrons in the nulceus of an atom. The reason we can get away with calling the tiny nucleus the key for the mass (remember the nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons) is because it is like over 99% of the mass of the atom (empty space and electrons have no significant mass).

So, lets take the element carbon. Carbon will always have 6 protons, and around 98% of the world's carbon has 6 neutrons (this is due to natural variation). So 6+6=12. For the large majority of naturally occurring carbon, the mass number is 12.

Do isotopes of the same element differ in mass number?

isotopes just mean they have a different number of neutrons so if the..Mass number = # of protons + # of neutrons -they will have a different (greater) mass

How are atomic mass and atom numbers related?

The mass number is the number of the Atomic Mass. The atomic mass is the mass of the atom of the element. There is no difference between the two, except mass number is referring to the number, while atomic mass is referring to the atom's mass in general, which is also expressed by a number. Basically, both terms mean the exact same thing.

What does the term mean atomic number mass number?

The atomic number represents the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, determining the element's identity. The mass number is the sum of the protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus, giving the atom its mass.

What do you mean by the atomic mass of an atom?

That's the mass of an atom of a chemical element expressed in atomic mass units. It is approximately equivalent to the number of protons and neutrons in the atom (the mass number) or to the average number allowing for the relative abundances of different isotopes.

What does the mass number on the periodic table mean?

The mass number is the combined number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the particular element you are looking at. NOTE: (don't be confused by the periodic table) Different elements have isotopes with varying mass numbers, so the mass number displayed on a periodic table is the ratio of those isotopic mass numbers in any given sample of the element your examining. This ratio is often confused with with the mass number of the element when it is displayed on periodic tables, it is actually the relative atomic mass. You can tell if a number is the mass number or a relative atomic mass by whether or not it is a whole number if it is then it's a mass number if it has decimal places out beside it then you're looking at relative atomic mass.

What is the mass number of cl35?

The mass number of the element chlorine is 35.5. The mass number (nucleon number) of an isotope of an element tells us the sum of the number of neutrons and protons. It is a decimal because mass numbers of elements are averages, based on the different isotopic forms of the element and their relative abundance.

Can an atom of two different elements have the same mass number?

Yes. The mass number is basic to the different elements, even more useful than the atomic number. (Unless it is an isotope. Isotopes have a different amount of neutrons than the basic element atom which makes a difference in mass number too. So, a difference in mass numbers doesn't always mean it is a different element.)
