The original recording is the source for all copies. That is the master. At first thought, one might theorize that all copies of DVDs and CDs for that matter are the master, since digital information does not degrade from generation to generation. This however is only true if all copies from the true master are processed digitally.
To make your own recording of someone else's music, contact the Harry Fox Agency for mechanical rights. To use someone else's recording, you need a mechanical right and a master right (and, if you want to use it in a video project, a synchronization right); master and synch rights come from the labels and publishers directly.
