Micro-organisms are beneficial to other organisms in many ways; in the grand scheme of the world, microorganisms are recyclers of waste because they can decompose compounds and release them back to the environment to its elemental state. For individual organisms, they can help with the normal digestive systems (in this case, they would be called probiotics), or their products (such as toxins) can be used by other organisms as a defensive mechanism against their antagonists.
