The Anglo-Norman French term which was variously spelled soler, solair, solere,solier, seler simply means an upper room. It derives from Latin solium, which has a number of different meanings.
Essentially a solar was a private room on the first (upstairs) floor of a manor house or town house of stone construction, for the sole use of the nobleman and his family. It might be heated with charcoal braziers and there might be seats built into the window-openings so that women could sit and look at the view or have maximum light for needlework. Servants would not generally be permitted into the solar, except perhaps for the lady's personal maid.
