The definition of an isthmus is a narrow piece of land that connects two other larger land masses. The two most known of these are the ones:
* connecting Africa and Asia called the Isthmus of the Suez; and
* the one in Panama connecting North and South America.
In these two examples the former is where the Suez Canal in Egypt is located and the latter in Panama which is divided by the Panama Canal.
