Neurotransmitters are called endogenous chemicals, (it means that they are formed inside of our body) ....Some neurotransmitters are synthesized from amino acids, that you can obtain from the diet. They transmit signals across a synapse ( synapse is another neurological element of the brain) from one neuron to another ( neuron is the most important element of the brain, and we have billions of it) but the group of elements which make possible you to think, work together, and so we can say that they are all important.

They also exist in the digestive system :

The gut's brain or the "enteric nervous system" is located in the sheaths of tissue lining the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon, but their primary function is to create thoughts in the brain. However, they play an important role in the digestive system, as well.
