A "north south" handbag is taller than it is wide.
The term "north south" can be used to describe other portable containers besides handbags such as tote bags, messenger bags, and so on.
When the bag is held upright so that the opening and carrying strap (and logos as well) are in the correct orientation for use, the measurement of the bag's vertical dimension is greater than that of its horizontal dimension. This term may have originated from visual interpretation, since the bag is taller in the "north" and "south" directions. Thus, sometimes short and wide bags are given the description "east west."
If a handbag can be thought of in the same terms as a sheet of letter paper, "north south" bag would have a "portrait" orientation, and an "east west" bag would have a "landscape" orientation.
